Wanna get out of debt overnight? If you have access to a lot of money (but not enough to pay off all your debt) then debt settlement might be for you. But consider it carefully before you decide.

The Pros and Cons of Debt Settlement

In theory, debt settlement is a great thing. What other debt management program can get you out of debt virtually overnight? Here's what happens: Once you decide to enroll in a debt settlement program, you contact a debt settlement company. They will ask you how much cash you have on hand so they know the amount they have to negotiate with. In most cases, debt settlement companies can get you reductions of 60-80% off your total debt. If you owe $10,000 but only have $4,000 saved, there's a chance that a debt settlement agent can get your creditors to agree to reductions so low that your $4,000 will settle all debts. However, your creditors will expect you to pay this amount immediately.

Now, for the downside. Obviously, your creditors aren't going to be too happy with you if they agree to a debt settlement. And some of them might only agree to settle for an amount of, say....$5,000. But you only have $4,000. In some cases, a good debt settlement company will be able to get them to agree to giving you 1-3 years to pay the difference. But in all cases, your creditors will report your participation in a debt settlement program to the three credit reporting agencies. This will be similar to having a late payment on your credit record. (On the other hand, that's better than having delinquent accounts on your credit report.) And for sure, those creditors who agree to it probably won't issue credit to you in the future - something you and your debt settlement services need to take into consideration.
